Silica Matting Agent
VS Series

Amorphous ultra-fine silica engineered for precise gloss control — without sacrificing transparency, dispersibility or film properties.

Overview

Engineered SiO₂·nH₂O for coatings that need to look right

SILSEP matting agents are synthetic amorphous silica in white powder form with porous structure, excellent optical properties and tight particle-size control (2–13 μm). All grades: whiteness 98, SiO₂ (dry basis) ≥99.9%, pH 6.5–7.5. Packaging: 10 kg paper bag.

Why formulators choose it

How It Works

The principle

After a coating containing matting agent is applied, silica particles distribute evenly through the wet film. As solvent evaporates the film shrinks; the matting particles shrink more slowly than the film, creating a micro-rough surface. Incident light is diffusely reflected by this micro-texture instead of mirrored — producing a uniform matte effect. Particle size and pore structure determine the balance between matting efficiency, transparency and feel.

Recommended Grades

Find your grade

VS500

Precipitated-process grade with high oil absorption (DBP 300–350 ml/100g) and 4–6 μm particle size. Excellent matting efficiency and cost-performance for thick-film, cost-sensitive systems. Recommended: furniture paint, pigmented wood systems, general industrial.

VS1531A

Gel-process grade, BET 290–350 m²/g, 4–6 μm, narrow particle-size distribution for clear systems. Comparable to ED2-type grades. Recommended: wood clearcoats, coil, industrial and plastic paint.

VS1551A

5–6 μm grade with high transparency and balanced matting/anti-settling behavior. Comparable to C805-type grades. Recommended: wood, coil, industrial and plastic paint.

VS1650A

Organically surface-treated 6–7 μm grade — improved slip, reduced anti-settling reliance, better gloss retention. Comparable to ED-30 / C7 / OK412-type grades. Recommended: premium wood finishes.

VS331P

Ultra-fine 2–4 μm grade with high oil absorption (350–380 ml/100g) for smooth, uniform low-gloss films. Recommended: leather finishes and soft-feel systems.

VS3451T

4–5 μm grade tuned for plastic coatings — balanced matting and recoatability. Recommended: plastic paint.

VS370T

Organically treated 6–8 μm grade for plastic, wood and waterborne paint. Comparable to OK520-type grades.

VS3651C

6–8 μm grade engineered for high-speed coil application and industrial paint lines — stable rheology at high shear.

VS370U

Organically treated grade with controlled oil absorption (140–180 ml/100g) engineered for 100%-solids UV-cure systems where standard grades lose matting power.
