Single-supplier dependence is a hidden cost: price captivity, shipment risk, no benchmark. Qualifying a second source properly costs a few samples and a structured month — and it is exactly how we ask customers to introduce SILSEP.
Steps
- Screen on paper first. Request TDS, SDS, recent COA and certificates — and verify certificate numbers with the issuing body (FAMI-QS and ISO registries are public).
- Define pass criteria before sampling. Write down the specs and performance thresholds the candidate must match. Ambiguity after the fact breeds bad decisions.
- Run a parallel test. Your current product as control, candidate at equal function (not equal weight — compare per active unit). Lab checks first, then a pen or pond trial.
- Place a paid trial order. One carton to one pallet. Judge the boring things: documentation accuracy, labeling, lead time honesty, response speed.
- Split volume, keep score. Start 80/20, review quarterly on quality consistency and service. A second source you never order from is not a second source.
Common mistakes
- Qualifying on price before performance — cheap failure is expensive
- Skipping the paid trial order and jumping to contract volume
- Letting the qualification file go stale — recheck certificates yearly
