Fishmeal is the most oxidation-prone material in the feed chain: high unsaturated fat, high iron, often months in hot storage. Oxidation eats energy value first, palatability second — and in the worst case, stacks self-heat.
Steps
- Treat at first receipt. Antioxidant added early prevents; added late merely accompanies. VSW5 at 2,000-3,000 g/T of fishmeal, pre-blended for even distribution.
- Verify the incoming state. Check peroxide value and temperature on arrival. Material already warm or rancid should be segregated — treatment cannot reverse oxidation.
- Stack for airflow. Smaller stacks with air channels; probe temperatures weekly. A rising trend inside the stack is the alarm, not the ambient reading.
- Control the microclimate. Shade, ventilation, off the floor, away from hot walls — the tropical storage basics apply doubly to fishmeal.
- Monitor monthly to dosing. Track PV monthly; use the oldest treated lots first. Log results — the data tells you whether to raise dose next season.
Common mistakes
- Waiting for a smell before acting — by then value is gone
- Under-dosing at complete-feed rates (100-300 g/T) when raw material needs 2,000-3,000 g/T
- Mixing antioxidant into the top of the bag instead of pre-blending through the lot
