How to Dose an Emulsifier in High-Energy Aqua Feed

Emulsifier response scales with the fat-digestion burden: the more added oil and the younger or colder the animal, the more an LPC lysophospholipid at HLB 8-12 has to work with.

Steps

  1. Map your fat load. List total lipid and added oil. Below ~5% added oil the response is usually marginal; 6-10%+ is the payoff zone.
  2. Start at the supplier band. Dose LPC per the grade TDS against oil percentage — then hold everything else constant for the trial period.
  3. Consider the reformulation play. The alternative use: keep energy targets but cut added oil 8-12%, letting emulsification recover the digestibility. Price the two routes; take the better margin.
  4. Trial with FCR as the endpoint. 6-8 weeks, replicate ponds or tanks, current formula as control. Weigh feed and biomass honestly — leaching losses count.
  5. Re-tune by season. Cold-water periods digest fat worse; many mills hold emulsifier through winter even at lower oil.
