Piglets are born preferring sweet — but at weaning, stress suppresses appetite exactly when starter intake matters most. The right sweetener choice is about distribution and stability as much as sweetness.
Steps
- Decide the taste profile. A sucrose-like curve (fast onset, clean finish, no bitter tail) matches what piglets know from sow milk. Blends built on neotame deliver this at low inclusion — VS3965's design basis.
- Check particle distribution. At 60-180 g/T inclusion, a tonne of feed carries a tiny active mass. Carrier-free micro-granulation (VS7188: ~76M particles/g) statistically guarantees sweetness in every mouthful; coarse blends cannot.
- Verify heat stability. Starter feed is usually pelleted. Confirm the sweetener tolerates your conditioning temperature — both SILSEP grades are validated at 85°C+.
- Pair with milk flavor for continuity. Sweetness says 'eat'; milk aroma says 'this is familiar'. VS382 + sweetener is the standard weaning-transition combination (VS382 at 600 g/T showed +13.65% intake in trials).
- Dose and validate. Start mid-band (e.g. 100-120 g/T of VS3965), then run a 2-pen comparison for two weeks before committing the full program.
Common mistakes
- Choosing on price per kg instead of cost per active unit
- Ignoring water systems — if you dose drinking water, dissolution speed (3 seconds for VS7188) becomes the deciding spec
- Switching sweetener and protein source in the same week — you will not know which change moved intake
